Della understands the excitement and stress of buying your first home. She experienced it herself back in 1980 when interest rates were 18–21%! She was forced into buying because she had too many pets in her little apartment and faced eviction if she didn’t find a new place for her fur babies.
Her husband was in school at LSU, with another year of coursework before he would graduate and start earning a good income. Della was managing a local pet shop, earning slightly above minimum wage.
They borrowed their down payment from a friend and took the leap into homeownership. It was a small house in a flood-prone area outside of Baton Rouge, but she finally had room for her horses and all her other critters. They knew they could make it until June 1981 if her husband graduated and immediately secured a good job in construction management. The labor market was in a recession, so it was a real gamble—but as it turned out, they made it by the skin of their teeth!
Della has personally bought and sold over 35 homes in her lifetime. Each one presented a unique set of obstacles she had to overcome to be successful. She faced doubts in every transaction that she had to resolve in her mind, heart, and bank account.
